What’s been happening in my world?
This week was a week to declutter. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been feeling a bit hemmed in, disorganised and sick of the winter! We had some nice weather on the weekend and it felt like a spring clean was due. It was my spare office room. To be honest, it had turned into more of a junk room. Just threw everything in there so I couldn’t see it in my main office area. It took a while trying to create some organisation out of the chaos. But in the end it was worth it. It’s even clear enough now to possible have someone work in there.   Think about this – you need to create the space for someone to fill it. If the space is already occupied there’s no room for anyone in it!

How to Make the Most of Your Facebook Posts

Try posting and responding to comments around the same time every day, if you can. If you can spend some time investigating, try to find out the time periods that most people interact on your page. Post and respond then (at the very least). Check the Facebook Insights for your page to get more insight into when people are interacting. I discussed Facebook Insights in Episode 20. I've also found a very informative PDF document about this that Facebook offers for free. The link is http://ads.ak.facebook.com/ads/FacebookAds/Pages_Insights_Guide_Updated.pdf .

You can also get email update notifications in your inbox when people post or respond on your Facebook page. To turn this option on, just go to your Facebook page, click on the "Edit Page" button in the top, right corner and select "Settings" from the left column menu. Some people might like turning this feature on and some might not. If the emails start to clog up your inbox, you can always turn this option back off and just go directly to your page to review new posts and comments.

If it can be worked into your business somehow, try to write a themed post on a regular basis; say, every Wednesday.

I've said it before, but remember, don't just broadcast sales pitches on Facebook. Make your main priority to build customer relationships on Facebook.

Don't think you have time for Facebook? Try starting out by just setting aside 5-10 minutes each day to at least check and see if there are any issues, questions, etc. that need answered.

If plausible, offer sneak peeks or teasers of upcoming products or services on Facebook. This can add excitement and extra reasons for people to keep visiting your Facebook business page.

If you mention someone by name in a post (and they're on Facebook too), type the @ symbol and then, without a space in between, begin typing their name and select their name from the dropdown menu that appears. This will automatically post to their wall as well. It's called a mention (or tagging).

Next week I’ll be talking about the social media site LinkedIn… so I’ll see you next week.

Critical Business Tool – Your Database

You could lose everything in your business but if you have your database you still have a business.

What if all you’ve got is a bunch of business cards, scraps of paper with contacts or all your contacts are in your phone? They can all be lost and you have no business.

What type of database do you need?

  • How do you start a database from scratch? Ask your self these questions first.
  • What kind of database system do you want to use?
  • Is there a database that is part of your website system?
  • Do you need a sophisticated database that enables you to sort through complex fields?
  • Do you want to be able to add comments, sales reports etc within your database?
  • You’ll want a form on your website so you can grab people’s details to grow your database. Therefore you’ll need a database system that will add that information automatically.

Let’s start with some basic fields
  • What fields do you need to help you to sort through your database?
  • i.e. Name, phone, email, address, state, suburb, postcode, country, gender, what are you interested in?, business name, website, how did you find out about us.
  • Where do you see your business in three years down the track?
  • Will your current fields support your business then?
  • Will your data fields be enough or will you have to contact everyone to get the right               information? That costs a lot of time and money.

If you liked this tip you can find read more in my free ebook ’20 Essential Building Blocks for Business Success Today’ valued at $47 available on our website www.theredtentwoman.com.au

At the end of the ebook there is a special offer where you can apply for a 1 hour business breakthrough session with me.

Serena Star Leonard | Red Tent Radio
Featured Interview with Serena Star Leonard
Author of ‘How To Retire in 12 Months’

Serena’s successful career in IT sales abruptly ended when she decided to quit after 9 years and pursue her dreams in making a difference in the world.  Serena was keen and green with a sense that anything was possible.  She loved every moment of the freedom of the pursuit of not-for-profits, charities and socially responsible businesses. What Serena lacked in experience she made up with unrelenting enthusiasm.

As it turned out Serena’s numerous experiences over time and passion for helping get people moving gave her the perfect grounding for business coaching and there she found my forte.

Late in 2009 Serena was ready for the next challenge.  In her work with small business owners Serena found that many common problems her clients faced were around their websites.  For many of them getting results from their website was like traversing a glacier blindfolded.

Serena lucked upon the perfect business partner who possessed complementary skills and Grassroots Internet Strategy was born.  A website packed full of great information, courses and resources designed to help any small business owner understand what they need to know to have more success online.

A fresh website project was a great opportunity to put all that they knew into practice and Serena decided to take on a personal challenge to blog the progress of the website.  She decided that if she was going to do a lot of work to create a new business then she was going to make it worth her while and aim to create a sustainable low maintenance income over 12 months.

So December 2009 saw the launch of both Grassroots Internet Strategy and this blog

Sometime in 2010 Serena was approached by John Wiley and Sons to produce a book on the journey and “How to Retire in 12 Months” was released in early April 2011.

Serena’s plans are to leave Australia later this year for some extended travel and new adventures.

Serena blogs about once a week, and you can find her on both Facebook and Twitter
